Chosen for Leadership Program

Benjamin Sortino of Year 11 has been accepted at the UBS Finance Academy to participate in a Leadership Program for one week.

The program aims to provide leadership in banking education and offers students an opportunity to explore and learn about a wide range of career opportunities in finance.  Benjamin is one of 50 students chosen from public schools in the ACT, NSW and Victoria, and he will travel to Sydney for the week beginning Monday 13th July.

We wish Benjamin well and look forward to finding out about his time at Macquarie

University.

35 Years in Education

Three of our staff members will this year  complete over 35 years of service with the

Department of Education.  Peter Sinclair, Loue Traianou and Graham Twist have distinguished careers in education characterised by their commitment to St Albans Secondary college and dedication to their work with young people, as well as their support of those new to the teaching profession. They have contributed positively to the lives of so many young people and their families, and it is a privilege to have them as members of staff.

Community Garden

Nine members of staff from investment bank Goldman Sachs J  B Were (GSJBW) last Friday swapped their suits for work gear and got stuck into a different kind of work - redeveloping our kitchen garden.

As part of the company's annual Community Teamworks program, GSJBW staff joined students and staff here to relocate and extend the vegetable gardens, and to work on the orchard. The gardens will be an important aspect of the outdoor teaching and sustainability program in the new Flexible Learning Centre.

The Community Teamworks project is one aspect of our partnership with Goldman Sachs J B Were which will also include a mock interview program and site tours for students, as well as a business etiquette  program later this year.

We are extremely fortunate to be able to work with GSJBW to enrich the educational and social experiences for our students, and on behalf of the school community, I thank them for their support.

  Back to School Day

Past students play an important part in the life of the college and each year in Education Week we welcome several of them back to the school to speak to current students.   This year Nick Szwed, (1965), Ray Galea (1980), Amra Pajalic (1994), Derek Cutajar (1983) and Debra Clancy (1974) entertained and motivated the Year 10 and 11 students with stories of their school days, the influence their teachers had on their lives, and their challenges and triumphs since leaving school.
Back to School Day is a wonderful opportunity for our students to reflect on their own  experiences and to be inspired by different generations of St Albans Secondary College students before them.  A special thank you to Nick, Ray, Amra, Derek and Debra for making time to speak with us.

Beacon Business Breakfast

Our annual Beacon breakfast, where we invite business people into the school to talk with staff and students, was held on Thursday 14th May. It was the usual great success.  The school is grateful to our Guest Speaker, Marleen Kairouz, State Member for Kororoit who spoke about the government's support for the business sector.
