Year 7 Transition PDF Print E-mail

The Year 7 Transition process begins early in Grade 5 for most students in the community.

School visits are organised for students to familiarise themselves with a Secondary school structure and in particular the Curriculum offered by St Albans Secondary College.

Activities are organised throughout the year to strengthen curriculum links between the neighbouring primary schools as well as to foster and maintain student connections, both to their primary school and secondary school.

An Information Night is organised to help parents become acquainted with the Secondary School, which is also an opportunity for the College to showcase its curriculum at Year Seven.

Close contacts are made by transition coordinators to share information about prospective students to insure that the welfare and educational needs of each individual is catered for.

The Secondary School Welfare Department in conjunction with the primary welfare co-ordinators invites some students to attend a day in Term Four to develop resilience and offer guidance concerning the transition process into Year Seven.

The Transition coordinator visits most prospective students at their Primary school to discuss the transition process as well as to be better acquainted with the new year seven group. Important advice from the primary schools is passed on to welfare, special needs, literacy, numeracy, Junior school and classroom teachers.

All students complete a passporting activity which allows students to highlight their achievements and set out their goals for learning at the Secondary School. This passporting is used by home group teachers to begin constructing a curriculum that is appropriate for the individual and class needs.

Students enroled at St Albans Secondary College at Year 7 are  supported in their learning through the guidance of a learning manager. This person  assists students to develop their learning skills, study skills and social skills in all subjects at Year seven. In addition all students are allocated an appropriate Literacy class to further their reading, comprehension and critical thinking.

A numeracy program is also offered to assist students who are not at the expected Maths level. All students are expected to attend a camp in Term One to foster their class relationships. This is combined with a social skills programme that is operated by senior school students.
